Our
Ranking Mostly Harmless, the 5th book in the Hitchhiker's
series, is certainly a departure from the other four. While the first four are
more of a lighthearted humor, Mostly Harmless is more dark and sarcastic. I think
most previous fans of the series hated the book because of this but I happened
to love it. As with all of the Hitchhiker books, the plot here is fairly weak.
It is more of a vehicle to drive the humor than anything groundbreaking or suspenseful.
But this is expected. The book features all of the original cast, but they are
a bit corrupted by the dark humor. This is probably one of the few things that
bothered me. They sort of fell out of character here, becoming a bit dark and
sarcastic themselves. The ending of the book is simply hysterical, it really pulls
in some of the jokes from the previous books and ties things up nicely and with
a wonderful degree of finality. You leave this book knowing they're won't be another
Hitchhikers anytime soon. Overall, if you are a fan of the series, give this a
shot but don't expect more of the same. You might not like the direction it went,
but I found it refreshing and appealing to my darker side. If you haven't read
the series though, don't start here. Pick up Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
and read through the series. |
